Indigenous Business Month: Working together to grow Aboriginal business

Celebrating Aboriginal business with Game Time Coffee

October is Indigenous Business Month, an opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses and the people behind them.

At SCS Indigenous (SCSi, it is also an opportunity to demonstrate how Aboriginal businesses can support one another and create opportunities through everyday business decisions.

As our business grows, we want that growth to benefit others too. Through our supply chain, partnerships, employment, training and introductions within our network, we aim to help other Aboriginal businesses grow alongside us.

Throughout October, we will profile an Aboriginal business we work with each week. We encourage our clients, partners, suppliers and broader network to learn about these businesses and consider giving them an opportunity.

Building a stronger Aboriginal business economy

When one Aboriginal business wins work and engages another Aboriginal supplier, the benefit can extend beyond the original contract.

That work can help the supplier grow, create employment, engage other businesses and support initiatives in community. Each business relationship creates the potential for further opportunities.

This is what we mean by a stronger Aboriginal business circular economy: Aboriginal businesses working together so that more of the value created continues to support other Aboriginal businesses and communities.

Corporate clients and partners also have a role to play. Choosing an Aboriginal supplier for a product or service can help strengthen this network and extend its impact.

Meet Game Time Coffee

Our first featured business is Game Time Coffee, founded by Jason Williams and Jake Long.

Game Time is a 100% Indigenous-owned business that roasts its coffee in Port Melbourne and supplies homes, workplaces and events across Australia.

For us, Game Time demonstrates how a business can deliver a quality product while creating opportunities beyond its core service.

Coffee brings people together. Jason and Jake have built on that connection to support the next generation of Indigenous athletes.

Supporting opportunity through the Game Time Sports Fund

Through the Game Time Sports Fund, the business helps young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athletes overcome financial barriers to participating in sport and pursuing their sporting aspirations.

The Fund aims to help young people develop through sport, build confidence and stay connected to community.

That approach resonates with us at SCSi. It shows how the success of an Aboriginal business can help create opportunities for others.

How our purchasing decisions contribute

We use Game Time Coffee within our own business and at events. Each purchase supports an Aboriginal supplier that is building its business and investing in community initiatives.

As that business grows, it can strengthen its capacity to create employment, develop supplier relationships and support initiatives such as the Game Time Sports Fund.

This is the multiplier effect we want to encourage. The more Aboriginal businesses work together, the more opportunities we can help create. When our clients and corporate partners also support those businesses, the potential grows further.

Make a simple switch

Our message during Indigenous Business Month is simple: if an Aboriginal business can provide the product or service you need, give them an opportunity.

The coffee in your workplace is a practical place to start. It is an everyday purchase that can support an Aboriginal-owned business and contribute to opportunities beyond the product itself.

We are proud to work with Jason, Jake and the Game Time Coffee team, and to feature them as the first business in our Indigenous Business Month series.
